THEOLOGY SHELF | BECAUSE HE LIVES DEVOTIONAL JOURNAL BY JENNIFER FLANDERS

Hello Readers!

I hope you all had a lovely Easter celebration this year! If you still have some thoughts inspired by this year's observance, I may have something right up your alley.

Jennifer Flanders has created a whole series of lovely, well thought out devotional journals in attractive, calming, mostly pastel colors for practically every occasion. Today I'm here to talk about her Easter inspired creation.

First off, the title is inspired by the song "Because He Lives", written by Bill & Gloria Gaither, performed by Kristin Chenoweth. The lyrics are included in the front of this book but you can also take a listen here if you like (if you've never heard the song or want to revisit). The rest of the journal features standard elements Flanders incorporates into all her works. As always, the pages are full of black and white antique-styled illustrations, some running full page. Some pages even offer areas where you can color in the artwork!

There are also verse prompts where you can look up verses Flanders notes and record your own thoughts on the selected passages. While some pages have the spaces available to color in, others encourage you to doodle as you gather your thoughts and decide what you'd like to write in the blank spaces. Basically, like any journal, there's no wrong way to capture your thoughts here! In Flanders' own words:

Added bonus, she also includes a "Passion Week Quiz" for you to have some fun and test your knowledge of Easter story trivia!

Some of the images were a little more blurry than previous Flanders journals, but overall Because He Lives remains a nicely thought out and wonderfully illustrated work, perfect for gift giving!

FTC DisclaimerBookCrash.com and Jennifer Flanders kindly provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions above are entirely my own.

READING THE MOVIE | JULIE & JULIA BY JULIE POWELL

This is a memoir of sorts written by blogger Julie Powell, who at the time of writing, was working as a secretary for a 9/11 government agency in New York City. She makes it clear in the book that she is limited about how much she can talk about her employer, as far as specifics, but that much she does divulge. She's not all that satisfied with her job (who hasn't been there!), lamenting her dissatisfaction to her husband. She goes on about the grief of turning 30 and wondering where her life's going, trying to figure out what her real goals in life are. His response is an idea to take her love of cooking and Julia Child and make a blog out of it. Julie then runs with the idea and decides to start a year-long project in which she cooks her way through all the recipes in Child's  Mastering The Art Of French Cooking , blogging about her results. The book turns out to be more about what Julie learns about herself in the process than the recipes themselves, which is ofte...
